The game reserve has Water Buffalo in very plentiful numbers. This is Australia's premier big game animal and deserves the highest level of respect when hunting. These animals are extremely tough and difficult to put down and are every bit as tough as the African Cape buffalo, if not more! Buffalo charges can and do, occur! On average, I
deal with at least 1 serious charge each year at Carmor Plains. Minimum recommended calibre is 338 Win Mag. We hunt Buffalo with the help of a 4wd or ATV either by finding fresh tracks that cross the road or spotting lone bulls out on the plains. Then we follow up on foot and get closer to the animal for a better look! Shooting ranges can vary from 20 metres in the thick rainforests and up to 100 metres on the open plains.
The horns of a mature buffalo bull measure from tip to tip direct, 95
- 150cm (38"- 60") wide! With a length of 68 - 90cm (27"- 36") of each horn. The diameter at the base varies from 40 - 48cm (16"- 19"). A Water Buffalo bull weighs on average between 700
and 800 kg, but in exceptional cases they can weigh up to a 1000kg (2400lbs)!
Carmor Plains is a Photographer's paradise, providing you with endless subjects. Wildlife such as crocodiles, kangaroos, wallabies, goannas and countless varieties of wetland and forest birds are always willing to present themselves along the way.
Australia Wide Safaris provides first class accommodation
and dining for our guests. Our private cabin's are all air conditioned with their own ensuite bathrooms. All meals are carefully prepared by our Chef in the homestead's dining room, over looking the vast flood plains. Breakfast and lunch can be served in the dining room or out on the deck of our gazebo which offers 270 degree views of the floodplains. Local game meats and some of the best Australian beef steaks and Barramundi fish fillets are on the menu daily.
We provide quality firearms (Blaser, Sauer, CZ Brno, Ruger, Beretta) in a number of calibres, 375 H&H for Buffalo, 308 for Wild Boar and 12 gauge for waterfowl. These rifles are fitted with telescopic sights or express sights. We can arrange your firearm import permits if you wish to bring your own rifle.
The hunting season is year round but best times are from late April to the end of November. Accessibility to game is not a problem and whilst different transport is used to hunt, the game is always guaranteed throughout the year. Our climate is most pleasant from May until September and the chance of wet weather is very slim. Temperatures during these times vary from 14 degrees at night to 32 degrees in the heat of the day. Our summers are a little hotter with high humidity.
Transport to the game reserve can be by road or private air charter. We will pick you up at the airport upon your arrival or from your Hotel. Travelling time by road from Darwin to Carmor Plains is 2 and 1/2 hours. If you prefer we can charter a light aircraft for you from Darwin, direct to the hunting camp, flying time 25 minutes!
Fishing is also available in the nearby rivers and creeks. This is done mostly by boat, using lures. Australia's most popular game fish, the Barramundi, is common in these waterways. Various other salt and freshwater fish such as Giant Trevally, Salmon, Mangrove Jack, Queen Fish and Jew Fish can be caught.
Clothing recommendations on a safari are cool (cotton) long sleeve shirts, long pants or shorts, both are ok. Good walking boots that are comfortable are important and they should be tolerant of water and mud. Water proof boots are not necessary. Bring a good hat and plenty of insect repellent and sun screen. A light coat can be necessary occasionally in the cool mornings.
Field preparation, salting, drying and packaging of trophies is done here at Carmor Plains and trophies are generally shipped within 3 months to your home or taxidermist.
Confirmation of safaris requires 50% deposit and the final account is paid at the end of the safari. Cancellation of a safari must be done 4 months before the safari date for a refund. Cancellations less than 4 months before the safari will be credited for a safari at a later date. Deposits and final payments can be made by - international bank transfer, bank cheques, credit cards or cash.
