Australia Wide Safaris operate their safari camp on 'Carmor
Plains'. This large game reserve of 100 000 acres is situated 200km east of Darwin. This pristine concession is privately owned and managed by Australia Wide Safaris so we have exclusive hunting rights over the entire concession. We reside on Carmor Plains 12 months of the year and conduct safaris from January to December! We know where the best trophy animals are living and can arrange a safari for you at any time of the year!
Half of the game reserve is covered by scenic flood plains, the other by thick forest. The flood plains are totally covered in water during the summer when 90% of the rain falls. During this period the game move higher up into the forest. The higher land is reasonably flat with a high upper canopy of trees and low shrubs and grasses. In some other areas there are thick rainforests and springs.
The game reserve has Water Buffalo in plentiful numbers. This is Australia's premier big game animal and deserves the highest level of respect when hunting. Whether it is on the open plains or at close quarters in the swamps and rainforest these animals are extremely tough and difficult to put down. Shooting ranges are rarely more than 80 metres and can be much closer in the heavy forests.
We also have some of the best Wild Boar hunting in Australia. It is normal to see 100 or more animals in one day. These wetlands are ideal for them and the boars grow to massive proportions of up to 160 kg. They are a truly wild animal with a lot of natural predators, mainly Crocodiles and Dingoes and as a result can be quite aggressive especially when cornered or wounded. Wild boar hunting varies but is most productive in the early mornings and late afternoons on the flood plains. During the heat of the day boars can be flushed from under heavy brush and can make for exciting close range hunting.
Game bird shooting on the flood plains is exceptional. Geese and Ducks are very plentiful and flocks of up to 2000 birds can be seen at times. Magpie geese are our largest game bird with a wing span of up to 1 metre. There are 4 main variety of Duck which all offer great wing shooting and excellent eating qualities.
Carmor Plains and Australia Wide Safaris offers Crocodile harvesting. We are the only safari operator in Australia to offer this. We have a license to catch and shoot crocodiles for their skins and skulls as trophy's. Whilst it is still illegal for our clients to actually hunt and shoot the crocs themselves, you can be involved with catching them and we can then sell the skin and skull to you.
Wild Goat hunting on a deserted island north of Carmor Plains is yet another game animal available to hunt. These wild goats have been on this island for more than 150 years and are now in high populations. A private air charter is taken from Carmor Plains direct to the island where we spend the day hunting for a large trophy male. Success is guaranteed and hunters will often take 2 of the species in the one day. They have an impressive long coat and the colours vary greatly from black to grey to brown or white or a mix of all of these! Span of the horns is from 65cm-110cm.
Fishing is also available in the nearby rivers and creeks. This is done mostly by boat, using lures. Australia's most popular game fish, the Barramundi, is common in these waterways. Various other salt and freshwater fish such as Giant Trevally, Salmon, Mangrove Jack, Queen Fish and Jew Fish can be caught.
Carmor Plains is a Photographer's paradise, providing you with endless subjects. Wildlife such as crocodile, kangaroo, wallaby, goanna and countless varieties of wetland and forest birds are always willing to present themselves along the way.
Australia Wide Safaris provides first class accommodation for our clients. Our cabin's are air conditioned with ensuite bathrooms. All meals are catered for in our homestead's dining area over looking the vast flood plains.
Transport to the game reserve can be by road or private air charter. We will pick you up at the airport upon your arrival at Darwin and we can also arrange accommodation before and after the safari. Travelling time by road from Darwin to Carmor Plains is 2 and 1/2 hours. If you prefer we can charter a light aircraft for you from Darwin, direct to the hunting camp, flying time 25 minutes!
We provide quality firearms in a number of calibres. 375 H&H for Buffalo and 308 for Wild Boar, 12 gauge for birds. We can arrange your firearm import permits if you wish to bring your own rifle.
The hunting season is year round but best times are from late April to the end of November. Accessibility to game is not a problem and whilst different transport is used to hunt, the game is always guaranteed throughout the year. Our climate is most pleasant from May until September and the chance of wet weather is very slim. Temperatures during these times vary from 14 degrees at night to 30 degrees in the heat of the day. Our summers are a little hotter with high humidity.
Clothing recommendations on a safari are cool (cotton) long sleeve shirts: long pants or shorts, both are ok. Good walking boots that are comfortable are important and they should be tolerant of water and mud. Bring a good hat and plenty of insect repellent and sun screen. A light coat can be necessary occasionally in the cool mornings.
